Are there any prerequisites for enrolling in the Video Game Design & Development Diploma Program?

As part of our simplified application process, you will need to complete the following as part of your application package:

  • • A 300-500 word essay. The essay should detail your career goals for the video game industry and why you wish to attend Toronto Film School. Your essay will be assessed on your overall understanding of the industry, and how you envision building a gaming career for yourself.
  • • Completion of a Grade 11 math course or math camp.
  • • Courses in Grade 11 physics and computers/digital media are strongly recommended.

What kind of equipment and software do I need for this program?

You’ll need:

  • • A computer equipped with a high-end graphics card, ample RAM and a fast processor.
  • • 3-D Modelling and animation software (like Maya or Blender).
  • • Game Engines (such as Unity or Unreal Engine).
  • • Graphic Design software (Adobe Photoshop).

Other programs you will learn from include Microsoft Visual Studio 2022, Unity 3D, Construct, Adobe CC Suite, Pro Tools, and Microsoft Office Suite. Don’t buy anything yet, you’ll be fully briefed upon enrolment.

How long does the video game development program take?

This 18-month program offers flexible learning options. You can choose to take all your classes online through remote synchronous learning, although you will have the option of participating in some classes on campus.

BACHELOR OF CREATIVE ARTS DEGREE PATHWAY

A creative diploma from Toronto Film School qualifies you for entry into Yorkville University’s Bachelor of Creative Arts (BCA) degree program. The BCA is designed to round out your education by teaching you the skills needed for business or leaderships positions in the creative arts.

Plus, it opens the door to Canada’s Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWP), where you may be able to obtain a work permit valid for up to 3 years.
